Today in the Canadian Parliament, Maurizio Bevilacqua (Liberal Immigration Spokesman) introduced a motion to the House that was passed in the Citizenship and Immigration committee late last year to allow soldiers refusing to serve in wars unsanctioned by the UN to obtain residency in Canada. This motion helps to address the case of Cory Glass, a US war resister in Canada who received orders last week to leave the country by June 12th.

A debate was called when the motion was supported by Olivia chow (NDP Immigration Critic and long-time supporter of the war resister movement). The Conservative government attempted to block the debate from reaching the floor by calling a procedural motion, which was defeated when all opposition parties united in a 121-97 vote.

The vote to pass or defeat the motion itself is scheduled for June 2nd. Keep your fingers crossed, and keep Cory and others like him in your prayers, if you go in for that sort of thing.
